5 out of 5 stars

"Mary of the Woods" by Charles Theriault tells the story of a young Acadian girl, a Mi'kmaq warrior, and a persistent family who embark on a journey of survival and unity, braving the relentless onslaught of greed and cruelty inflicted by the British. Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous time in Canadian history, the author masterfully weaves a tale of the human spirit's resilience in the face of adversity.

Mary's story was like a wild river, full of twists and turns that tugged at my heartstrings. As I followed her journey through a world of cruelty and greed, I couldn't help but be moved by the changes that rocked the lives of the people in Atlantic Canada. I have always had an interest in historical events around the world, so I was quite familiar with the historical context of the Great Acadian Expulsion. I've heard both French and English perspectives passed down through generations, but this book gave me a unique and eye-opening view of the events. From the vivid writing and engaging characters to the authentic portrayal of time and place, this book was an absolute delight to read. I was fully immersed in the story. The writing was engaging; it also imparted valuable knowledge. One thing I learned, especially from the character of John, was that life can be so unpredictable. Some things happen beyond our control, and if by any chance we get a second shot, we should grab it.

I love the author's attention to the strength and power of the female characters. Plus, this book has no notable negatives, so I rate it a 5 out of 5. I must commend the author because, while this book begins from two different perspectives, they skillfully weave these two narratives together, creating a powerful and unified perspective that adds depth and meaning to the story. I highly recommend this book to history buffs.

This is very interesting for anyone who has any curiosity about old Canada.
So much of this way of life was unknown to me.

Mary of the Woods is a must read. It is probably more important today than ever. It makes me angry when I hear people say, "What's so important about history?" If we don't know our history we seem to constantly repeat our past mistakes. The Maritimes have had a turbulant history, so it's reasonable that we would like to forget our most unpleasant parts.
Charles has done a magnificent job letting us relive the wonder and horror of what has taken place here. We also hope to find out Mary's future in a forthcoming sequel.

I love this book! I was expecting another account of the tragic explusion of the Acadians from Acadie. Instead, I was drawn into a totally unfamiliar world of post-explusion drama that positively crackles with tension and suspense, set in rich historical context populated by compelling characters. It is a page-turner and would make a great movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent historical review with lots of exciting times

I live in the province where this story originates. We all have our ideas of the great expulsion, both the French and the English. These views have been handed down on both sides. This book not only shares both sides but explains a lot of the situation in a fictional format. When reading this story, I became Mary. I experienced her fears, her happiness and her losses. It is the kind of book that one does not want to put down. And when it was finished, I wanted a sequel. Where is Mary when she is an adult? And was Mary real? … maybe. Thank you Charles Theriault for such a great historical account of times in the past.

I absolutely loved this book, it was so engaging and easy to follow and one could really envision the characters and suffer with them through all the anxious moments. It is a deeply touching narrative, very well written and very educative at the same time. I highly recommend this book!!!

I was captured emotionally by the main character Mary, who takes the reader with her through a difficult, bittersweet journey intertwined with the cruelty and greed of European conflicts which changed forever the lives of both the indigenous people and new settlers that existed peacefully in what is now Atlantic Canada.
I was so absorbed by this book that I never wanted it to end.
I read it a second time a few months later and savoured every well written sentence.

I loved everything about this book - the writing, the characters, the story, and Theriault’s knowledge of, and particular attention to time and place. Although we often see man against man, and often man against nature, the particular powers of the female shine throughout.
